Set in the 1930's in England, the story takes place at Gosford Park, the majestic country estate where Sir William McCordle (Michael Gambon) and his wife, Lady Sylvia (Kristin Scott Thomas), are giving a splendid party for their relatives and friends, aristocrats and celebrities. The guests intend to spend the weekend enjoying the luxurious decor of the gilded drawing rooms and indulging in gluttony. The personal maids and servants are ready to satisfy every wish and caprice of the carefree Corinthians. The party is about to begin but the host is unexpectedly found dead, and what is worse is that somebody has had a hand in dispatching him to the next world.

It begins with an abstract battle of light and darkness set to the music of Beethoveen's Fifth Symphony. Then we see the adventures of a Humpback Whale calf and his pod set to "The Pines of Rome." Next is the humourous story of several lives in 1930's New York City, scored with "Rhapsody in Blue." Following is a musical telling of the fairy tale, "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" set to Dmitri Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2. Then a goofy Flamingo causes havoc in his flock with his yo-yo to the tune of the finale of "Carnival of the Animals." This is followed by the classic sequence from the original film, "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" starring Mickey Mouse and followed by "Pomp and Circumstance" starring Donald Duck as a harried assistant to Noah on his Ark. Finally, we see the awesome tale of the life, death and renewal of a forest in a sequence featuring the composition, "The Firebird."

This movie is an interpretation of Garrison Keillor's radio show of the same name. After 32 years, Garrison Keillor's radio variety show is coming to an end. Some establishment had bought the radio station this program stapled, so this very broadcast will be the last... Keillor and Altman worked hard at creating a distinct element of authenticity. The entire film (except opening and closing scenes) was shot in St. Paul's Fitzgerald Theater, home to the show since 1978. "Prairie Home Companion" band members and regular guests also appear in the film.

But a lucrative opportunity comes up when one of the major networks is producing and airing a special on the history of comedy, and want The Sunshine Boys to appear. Ben has to try and convince the comedy team to reunite for just this one gig. Ben has to try and manage the individual quirks and personalities of each of The Sunshine Boys while putting on a good face to the network that there is harmony within The Sunshine Boys comedy team. Ben also has to manage the lives of two men in the twilight of their lives.
Desmond Doyle is devastated when his wife abandons their family on the day after Christmas.
