Three story lines are interwoven in the movie. A sensual brunet beauty (Laura Harring) survives after a terrible car accident but suffers amnesia. An ambitious young blonde ingénue, Betty Elms (Naomi Watts), dreaming of movie stardom goes to Los Angeles for an audition and finds a woman named Rita at her aunt's apartment. Betty really feels for the lost woman and is willing to help her to investigate the mysterious accident. Meanwhile, a severe serious young director, Adam Kesher (Justin Theroux) disagrees with a producer and bankers about the female lead in his new movie. |

A mentally challenged, middle-aged man named Chance (Peter Sellers) has spent all his life working as a gardener in the townhouse of a wealthy old man in Washington. When the owner dies, Chance is kicked out of the house. Knowing of the outside world only from maid Louise (Ruth Attaway) and television, he makes his first uncertain steps in the unfamiliar world and unexpectedly finds himself struck by a limousine owned by an influential and wealthy industrialist, Ben Rand (Melvyn Douglas). His wife Eve (Shirley MacLaine) invites Chance to their estate to convalesce and have dinner. Well-dressed and neat, the former gardener is mistaken for a man of means and his simple and serious utterances about gardening, which sound like metaphoric economic and political predictions, impress Ben so favorably that he decides to take Chance under his wing. He is soon introduced to US President (Jack Warden) and eventually rises to a powerful position in Washington society. |

Safecracker Henri Charriere (Steve McQueen), also known as Papillon ("butterfly"), is wrongly convicted of murder and sentenced to life in a French penal colony on Devil's Island whose name speaks for itself. He keeps his mind on an escape. Papillon befriends his cell-mate Louis Dega (Dustin Hoffman), a counterfeiter, who agrees to join forces to escape from the prison. But they are captured and incarcerated in solitary confinement. Papillon makes numerous escape attempts which are foiled every moment either by an informant or by force majeure. Despite the consequent recapture and even more horrible conditions, Papillon tries not to lose heart and continues his attempts to gain freedom.

Set almost entirely in London, England during five frantic weeks before Christmas follows a web-like pattern of inter-related, loosely related and unrelated stories of a dozen or more various individuals with their love lives, or lack of them. The central character is the new bachelor prime minister David who cannot express his growing feelings for his new personal assistant Natalie. The prime minister's older sister Karen slowly grows aware of her husband Harry's flirtation with an office worker named Mia. Karen's friend Daniel is a recently widowed writer whose 11-year-old son asks for love advice about a girl he has a crush on. Meanwhile, Jamie is another writer who leaves his girlfriend after catching her cheating on him and travels to France to write a novel where he pursues a possible romance with his non-English speaking Portuguese maid Aurelia. Also, Harry's American secretary Sarah questions a romance she pursues with the office hunk Karl, but her personal family problems get in the way. Other secondary characters involve a photographer who pursues his best friend's new wife Juliet; a pair of movie stand-ins, named John and Judy, who grow closer after their simulated love scenes; a libidinous chum who wants to travel to Wisconsin, USA to score with women; and a burned-out former rock star named Billy Mack who is the main connection between all stories involved. |

The action takes place in Japan in the 1870s. Captain Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise), a respected American military officer and Civil War veteran, accepts an offer to travel to the Land of the Rising Sun to train the country's regular army in the art of modern warfare. Nicholas Garrigan (James McAvoy), a young idealistic Scottish doctor, wants to escape from the bourgeois life of his parents and thus volunteers to work in a remote Ugandan village. Nicholas soon catches himself being his advisor on all matters, from architecture to foreign affairs. At first he feels proud to be given the honor of being Amin's closest confidante but then becomes appalled by the tyrant's savagery and murderous insanity. Moreover, he realizes that he is abetting Amin. Eventually, Garrigan has to put out considerable effort in order to avoid falling victim to the barbaric dictator and escape Uganda alive. |
