Eddie Flemming (Robert DeNiro) used to be an ordinary NYC homicide detective. But his purposefulness, persistence and tenacious mind while investigating the most sophisticated crimes allowed Eddie to attain celebrity status among the citizenry. Therefore his face appears on the most famous magazine covers from time to time. Meanwhile, two fellow criminals - Emil Slovak (Karel Roden) from Czechoslovakia and Oleg Razgul (Oleg Taktarov) from Russia – come to New York to make it big at any cost. When they happen on People magazine with Eddy on the cover, they come up with the brilliant idea of murdering him and filming the crime. They hope to evade crime penalty due to pretended insanity (videotaping their murders is incontestable proof of their irresponsibility). Then they plan to become famous and rich by selling the movie to the popular tabloid TV show "Top Story". |

The thriller tells a tragic story that happens in the US Army. Warrant Officer Paul Brenner (John Travolta) is assigned to investigate the murder of Elisabeth Campbell (Leslie Stefanson), the daughter of the prominent Lieutenant General Campbell (James Cromwell). The young woman, who is an army captain in psychological operations, is found naked, tied to tent poles and strangled. Seven years ago, when Elisabeth was a cadet at West Point, she was brutally beaten and gang-raped by fellow trainees during a training exercise. Her father forced her to keep mum and thus the assailants escaped punishment. The incident itself and the General's deliberate cover-up changed the girl's attitude towards her dad and psychologically damaged her, causing her to become sexually promiscuous. The investigator and his assistant, Sara Sunhill (Madeleine Stowe), find compromising videotapes in a secret room in Elisabeth's house. The grief-stricken General, who is a Vice-Presidential candidate for the upcoming elections, finds himself in a political crisis and wants Brenner to close the investigation... |

Based on the 1973 novel by J. G. Ballard. James and Catherine Ballard are a married couple whose sex life has been reduced to recounting tales of mutual infidelity to turn each other on. One night, James causes a head-on collision with a car carrying Dr. Helen Remington, killing her husband and severely injuring her and himself. Subsequent encounters with each other find that they are oddly sexually aroused by the danger of car accidents and potential accidents, and, with Catherine, soon fall in with a cult of car crash fetishists. The group is led by Vaughan, a former scientist twisted by his own disfigurement in an accident, and, as a result, a man obsessed with car crashes as a liberation of sexual energy. Vaughan inducts the Ballards and Dr. Remington into his surreal world of sex in the back seats of cars, re-enactments of famous car crashes (i.e. James Dean and Jayne Mansfield), viewing photos of accident victims and screenings of collision videos as pornography, and fender benders as mating rituals. |
