GULLIVER and TATE - nickname 'Treacle' - are two ordinary 18 year-olds serving in the British Army in Iraq. Their platoon is struggling to maintain the uneasy peace of 2003. When their popular company captain, GODBER, is killed on patrol by a roadside bomb, morale in the platoon hits rock bottom. Acting on orders they round up several suspects from house-to-house searches. That night feelings at the camp are running high and as the chain of command is weakened and events spiral out of control. The lads end their tour of duty and return to England full of stories but also shaken by their experiences. Iraq comes back to haunt them when Gulliver's jilted girlfriend, Shelley, decides to get her own back on him by giving photos of the events in Iraq to the British police. The story hits the press, and Gulliver and Treacle, now the most reviled men in Britain, face court martial. The army claims the two are 'rotten apples' acting alone. Guilt-ridden and abandoned, the pressure is too much for a traumatized Treacle. Gulliver, however, is determined to remain loyal to 'his army'. Only when he is truly alone does he have to decide if he must keep his secrets or explosively have his day in court, and tell the truth about the events of that fateful night. |

The movie recalls an inspiring story of juvey detention camp officer Sean Porter (Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson) and his fellow colleague Malcolm Moore (Xzibit) who came up with an idea of forming a high-school-level football team from a ragtag group of hoodlums. They saw football and team spirit as a positive way for the felons to overcome their fears and frustrations, gain self-esteem and learn social responsibility. Porter didn't think that his proposal would meet with resistance from his skeptical bosses and coaches at rival high schools who were unwilling to face juvenile delinquents on the football field.

Based on Stephen King’s novel, the movie tells the story of Bobby Garfield (David Morse), a middle-aged photographer who returns to his hometown for a funeral of his childhood friend. The story begins when 11-year-old Bobby (Anton Yelchin) and his best friends, Carol (Mika Boorem) and Sully (Will Rothaar), enjoy their sweet childhood days. Into his life comes a mysterious stranger named Ted Brautigan (Anthony Hopkins) who befriends Bobby and tries to replace his father. The boy suddenly gets what he really needs – his parents’ love. His mother Liz (Hope Davis) is embittered after her husband’s death and doesn’t devote loving care to her little son. Ted comes into a vacancy in Bobby’s heart; he opens the boy’s eyes to the world around him and helps him to understand his own feelings toward Carol and his mother. However, Ted keeps his own secrets deep in his mind, and Bobby attempts to stop a powerful danger that's pursuing his adult friend. |

Hancock turns the standard superhero movie inside-out. The titular character, played by Will Smith, can fly, has super strength and is invulnerable. But he's also a sloppy, arrogant alcoholic who causes millions of dollars in property damage whenever he bothers to fight crime. When he saves the life of a PR agent named Ray (Jason Bateman, Arrested Development), Ray decides to improve Hancock's image—starting by having Hancock surrender himself to the authorities and go to prison for his lawless behaviour. The idea is that once he's in prison, the crime rate will go up and people will start realising Hancock might be of value after all. This is only the first act of Hancock though—from there, the film takes several surprising turns that shouldn't be revealed. Hancock isn't a great movie, but it is an extremely entertaining one. The script, which holds together far better than most superhero movies, has a propulsive plot, good dialogue, some compassion for its characters, and even an actual idea or two. The spectacular action at least gestures towards obeying the laws of physics, which actually makes the special effects more vivid. The three leads (Smith, Bateman, and Charlize Theron as Ray's wife, Mary) deftly balance the movie's mixture of comedy, action, and drama. All in all, a smart subversive twist on a genre that all too often takes itself all too seriously. |
