In an animated fairy tale world, a young girl meets and falls in love with the handsome prince of her dreams. While visiting the Earth at Night, a group of alien botanists is discovered and disturbed by an approaching human task force. Because of the more than hasty take-off, one of the visitors is left behind. The little alien finds himself all alone on a very strange planet. Fortunately, the extra-terrestrial soon finds a friend and emotional companion in 10-year-old Elliot, who discovered him looking for food in his family's garden shed. While E.T. slowly gets acquainted with Elliot's brother Michael, his sister Gertie as well as with Earth customs, members of the task force work day and night to track down the whereabouts of Earth's first visitor from Outer Space. The wish to go home again is strong in E.T., and after being able to communicate with Elliot and the others, E.T. starts building an improvised device to send a message home for his folks to come and pick him up. But before long, E.T. gets seriously sick, and because of his special connection to Elliot, the young boy suffers, too. The situation gets critical when the task force finally intervenes. By then, all help may already be too late, and there's no alien spaceship in sight.

This world is built as a conflict-free society after the devastating Third World War, the monocratic Father and the Tetragrammaton have established the dictatorship over the Libria, a futuristic city-state. Human emotions are suppressed by voluntary injections of the "prosium", a preparation which helps the System to control its citizens. John Preston (Christian Bale), a government special agent is also under the influence of this drug, but when he forget to take a doze, he accidentally hear the fragment of the Beethoven's Ninth Symphony seeing the sunrise and discover himself unable to be a pawn of the System anymore as his emotions awake.

The creepy thriller follows five teenage friends, Ash (Bruce Campbell), his girlfriend Linda (Betsy Baker), and their classmates Shelly (Sarah York, Scott (Hal Delrich) and Cheryl (Ellen Sandweiss), who venture to travel to an abandoned mountain cabin in the impassable woods of Tennessee. Once there, they stumble upon the Book of the Dead, and a reel-to-reel tape recorder belonging to a professor of archaeology. Playing back the professor's recorded incantations, the kids unwittingly resurrect dormant demons from the depths of the woods. One by one, the youngsters are transformed into the evil dead and start hacking each other to pieces. Only Ash is left intact to battle the evil spirits.

In the ensuing confrontation the monk cut a deep scar on O'Hara's face but Lee's sister ultimately perished, and at her gravesite Lee vowes revenge for her death. Also attending the tournament are two American martial arts experts, John Roper and Kelly Williams, who served together in Vietnam and took differing paths toward martial arts upon their discharge - Roper is on the run from Mafia gambling debt collectors, while Williams was accosted by two racist cops whom he'd dispatched before stealing their car to escape. All three will soon find themselves at the mercy of Han and his army of martial arts fighters as he protects his underground factory of narcotics and prostitution.

Nine years haven't dulled Blanchett's ability to play this—or any other—character with an impressive range of fire and tenderness. Her chemistry with the infinitely watchable Owen is one of the film's highlights. As in ELIZABETH, director Shekhar Kapur doesn't restrict himself from using artfully constructed shots that aren't normally used in period dramas. It's a modern retelling of history, and Kapur and his director of photograpy, Remi Adefarasin, aren't content to let the film have the standard look of many films in the genre. Costume designer Alexandra Byrne follows the same logic, creating stunning dresses for Elizabeth that draw inspiration both from modernity and the time period. If Blanchett weren't such a gifted actress, the gorgeous costumes might threaten to overtake her as the star of the film.
