This series operates on many levels. At the heart of the series is the tempestuous relationship between Margaret Hale, a young woman from a southern middle class family who finds herself uprooted to the north, and John Thornton, a formerly poverty-stricken cotton mill owner terrified of losing the viability of his business. Around them are class struggles between the workers and mill owners and ideological struggles between the industrial North and the agrarian South. After moving North, Margaret's father befriends his student Mr. Thornton. Margaret has already formed her opinion of Mr. Thornton independently after seeing him treat his workers harshly. As the series progresses, she and we the audience begin to learn that his strict treatment is due to an overarching concern for his mill and by extension, his employees. John Thornton, on the other hand, is attracted to Margaret's independence and position in society as a well-educated Southerner. As in "Pride and Prejudice" the marriage proposal comes in the middle of the series and is rejected by Margaret. Contrary to "Pride and Prejudice" it is mirrored in social upheaval as the entire town is brought to its knees by a strike. The latter half of the series is an unraveling of the former misunderstandings ending in a romantic reconciliation which is again mirrored by reconciliation between workers and mill owners.
This thought-provoking movie is divided into three chapters concerning three different men whose lives intertwine in the most bizarre and mysterious ways.
"The Prisoner" tells the story of a popular Hollywood TV actor named Gary (Ryan Reynolds) who becomes distraught after being dumped by his girlfriend. To cope with the sharp pain of the breakup, he drinks and uses crack cocaine, then decides to burn her belongings but uses too much lighter fluid and burns down his house. After his escapade Gary ends up living under home arrest and the supervision of a cheery, serious publicist, Margaret (Melissa McCarthy), who moves him into the empty house of a television writer. He befriends an attractive next-door neighbor, Sarah (Hope Davis), and mysteriously becomes haunted by the number nine.
"Reality Television" focuses on Gavin (Ryan Reynolds), the house's owner who is away in Canada. He is shooting a supernatural network television drama starring his best friend Melissa McCarthy. When the network boss and studio executive Susan (Hope Davis) decide to replace Melissa with another actress, Gavin must tell her bad news.
"Knowing" finds a videogame designer, Gabriel (Ryan Reynolds), facing car trouble on an outing in the Hollywood Hills. Leaving his wife Mary (Melissa McCarthy) and child (Elle Fanning) in the car, he goes to seek help and encounters Sierra (Hope Davis), a strangely wary woman.
Howard Beale (Peter Finch) is an ageing TV anchorman for UBS who is fired, effective in two weeks, after his ratings have been steadily deteriorating. He reacts to this by sensationally announcing on live television his intention to commit suicide on air. In doing so, Beale becomes a major TV icon and one of the most valuable assets to the Communications Corporation of America (CCA), the company that is gradually taking control of UBS. As a result he is given his own show as 'the mad prophet of the air-waves'. He appears live on television every week-day evening to tell the real truth to the people of America. The programme is a huge success but Beale uses his power to make startling revelations about CCA, leaving the company executives with a serious problem.
