The Square Peg represents a classic World War II farce comedy starring Norman Wisdom, perhaps the best of the Wisdom comedies. Numerous comic sequences and memorable characters are finely featured in this perfectly constructed and intriguing film.
While carrying out road repairs in an Army training base, Pitkin (Norman Wisdom) and his sidekick Grimsdale (Edward Chapman) keep besting and irritating their commanding officer who finally arranges to have them conscripted and sent to France. As they undertake basic training, Pitkin falls in love with a girl Cartland by name (Honor Blackman) who soon leaves the camp for her secret mission (in France). Having arrived in France, the guys go on mending roads in front of the Allied advance and eventually get captured, but, curiously enough, it appears that Pitkin bears an uncanny resemblance to Schreiber, the German General, and is mistaken for him...
