Dr. David Marrow (Liam Neeson) calls three insomniac volunteers, Eleanor Vance (Lili Taylor), Theo (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Luke Sanderson (Owen Wilson), to participate in a sleep disorder study which is supposed to take place in a huge sinister deserted mansion with a terrifying past. It was built 130 years ago by a textile tycoon, Hugh Crain (Charles Gunning), for his beautiful wife Carolyn (Hadley Eure) and his kids who died aborning and now haunt their house. The research subjects soon are shocked to discover that they are actually selected for an experiment on human fear.
As a kid, Jarrid (Don 'The Dragon' Wilson) was taken from an orphanage and forced to undergo a brutal experiment on the development of prevision. Due to the successful experimentation he has the ability to see into the future. Adopted and raised by a CIA operative, he grows to become a federal agent. Jarrid happens to be charged with the duty of killing the other subjects of that secret experiment. Oddly enough, they all turn up dead before he can get to them.

During a failed art heist, the Djinn is once again liberated. This time, to complete the 1001 wishes that he needs before the final 3, he lets himself go to prison, where he starts his evil reign twisting the hopes of the prisoners. Once power is restored to the ship strange things start to happen and the crew mysteriously disappear one by one. It isn't until the discovery of the last remaining Russian crew member, the chief science officer Nadia Vinogradiya ('Joanna Pacula' (qv)), that the crew realise the enemy ranged against them isn't the Russians but something far more malevolent...
