Color to fill a community gap.

From problem block to top Instagram “selfie” location. With this CoPlace, color went a long way towards improving a community.

The Rainbow Building in the North Park neighborhood of San Diego.
Its color attracts attention and inspires people to continue to improve its environment. Before it was the Rainbow Building, however, this CoPlace was home to an adult bookstore. Many of its neighbors experienced low property values and high crime rates due to the nature of the people that business attracted. CoPlace saw an opportunity to change this.

Working with artist Risk Rock, CoPlace came up with a unique rainbow-colored exterior concept that would capture people's attention. The Rainbow Building is now home to CoPlace headquarters, local merchants, start-up businesses and residential real-estate. It has become a landmark and inspired other nearby properties to express their own unique personality.

The Rainbow building has become a landmark.  It has inspired surrounding local properties to express their own unique personality.

Its completion also birthed a new annual event. Each year neighborhood residents shut off the Rainbow Building’s entire block, and come together to enjoy a block party full of musical talent and culinary delights. Residents from abutting neighborhoods NorthPark and Hillcrest meet at the Rainbow Building to celebrate.

During the first such event, many community leaders came forward in support of the endeavor. Local residents were inspired by the way CoPlace brought these two communities together in an impactful way.
Not only has the Rainbow Building improved the community, it has also had a positive impact on real estate values. The Rainbow Building has been able to double its value in less than three years in a slow market. In addition, the Mayor of San Diego awarded CoPlace for its progressive approach to improving the San Diego community with the Rainbow Building.

By taking a creative approach that matched the needs of the community, the Rainbow Building has been a CoPlace success.
